Dendrobium Chanthaboon Sunrise

I purchased this orchid through mail order from Orquideas del Turabo.

The description below was generated from AI Overview on Google when I researched it’s history. It’s the most concise description of the plant so I thought I’d share.

The Dendrobium Chanthaboon Sunrise orchid was developed in 2011 by Chanthaboon Orchids and is named after them:

  • Origin: A cross between the Dendrobium lamyaiae and Dendrobium friedericksianum, both of which are native to Thailand
  • Registration: Registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in 2011
  • Classification: A “primary hybrid” orchid, meaning it’s a cross between two species

Here are some characteristics of the Dendrobium Chanthaboon Sunrise orchid:

  • Flowers: Clusters of orange, star-shaped flowers with a maroon-sprayed, yellow lip
  • Fragrance: Long-lasting and fragrant
  • Growing conditions: Prefers bright filtered light and cool-intermediate conditions
  • Watering: Water generously when actively growing, but give it a cool, dry rest in the winter
  • Leaf loss: It’s normal for the orchid to lose its leaves before flowering
  • Blooming: Blooms 2–3 times per year for 4–12 weeks
  • Plant height: 20–60 cm

The name Dendrobium comes from the ancient Greek words dendron meaning “tree” and bios meaning “life”. This refers to the epiphytic habit of most species.

Here are pictures of mine in bloom. This is not the sexiest orchid out of bloom it is quite spindly. When the stalks began to produce flower shoots, it was fairly sudden and surprising. As it says above the stalks lose most of the leaves when the flowers start to grow. So I thought it was dying :). Mine does not give off any fragrance. The blooms are starting to wilt now but they’ve lasted a good month. I was excited about this bloom because it was very unexpected and welcomed.
